Plane Spotter
AOPA
Survivor
To see the warbird-derived aerobatic airplane on the ground, a plane spotter might readily accept the unfavorable comparison its appearance has generated to sleeker show planes. You might depart the scene under the misguided impression that the 1970s-era Soviet-built airplane's flight characteristics are no more engaging than its aesthetics. But seeing the Yakovlev Yak–50 doing what it does best—formation flying and dogfighting—would throw that impression for a loop, assuming you were lucky enough to observe one of about 100 surviving Yak–50s (of the 314 built) in action.
Final Exam
Question

I have a private pilot, single-engine-land rating, and I'm working on my commercial multiengine-land rating. When I pass my flight test, will I have both a private and a commercial pilot certificate?
Answer
No. A pilot can hold only one grade of pilot certificate. When you pass, you will be issued a commercial pilot certificate with a multiengine-land rating, but you will retain private privileges for single-engine land; that will be noted on your new certificate. You will surrender your private pilot certificate at the end of your successful flight test.

Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
