'The spaceship'
Somewhere out there are several hundred youngsters who recall when they flew in a spaceship. As such stories go, descriptions of the craft—it resembles a small airplane with a short, wide wing and tiny horizontal tail—might seem to corroborate the recollection. Further examination reveals they rode in a Dyke Delta, a delta-wing, retractable-gear, fiberglass-and-steel-tube design first spotted in skies in the 1960s. Homebuilder Alan White wrote that he has flown 250 passengers from the EAA Young Eagles program in this Lycoming-powered example that many passengers nicknamed "the spaceship."

Question

I am instructing a student pilot who is training for his private pilot airplane certificate. His medical certificate prohibits night flying. Is he still required to receive the night flying dual instruction specified in 14 CFR 61.109(a)(2)?
Answer
Yes. He cannot fly at night solo or as pilot in command, but he still must receive the three hours of night training to meet the aeronautical experience requirements for the private pilot flight test.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
