The You Can Fly program targets four aspects of general aviation: lapsed pilots in its Rusty Pilots program, flight training, flying clubs, and the high school initiative. Reaching out to educators to provide them with the tools to encourage STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education through aviation has been a program success. More than 300 educators, administrators, and industry experts will be attending this year’s symposium.
“The AOPA high school symposium is the only one like it in the country focused on high school aviation programs,” said Cindy Hasselbring, AOPA senior director of the high school initiative. “Our speakers come with a wealth of experience in classrooms and can help launch new high school aviation programs or enhance what already exists.”
Sessions for educators include programs such as “Drones in Your School,” “Your Airport as a Resource,” “Building a Flight Training Program at Your School,” and “Using Simulation to Teach Your STEM Class.” These sessions are led by AOPA and aviation industry leaders and there will be a panel with speakers from Delta Air Lines, UPS, the U.S. Air Force, and the FAA.
“Through this event, aviation educators will no longer feel isolated, but learn that there is a community around them supporting their efforts and further impact the next generation of pilots,” said Hasselbring.
The You Can Fly program is entirely funded by charitable donations to the AOPA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
