1. The correct answer is D. FAR Part 43, appendix A, paragraph c, details 31 specific items of approved preventive maintenance that an owner can perform.

2. The correct answer is A. To use a transponder, it must have been tested and inspected within the preceding 24 calendar months. The inspection must be noted in the aircraft maintenance records as well. (FAR 91.413)

When too many such transmitters attempt to interrogate a DME ground station, the station lowers its own receiver gain until it “hears” only the number of transmissions it can handle. This means that those farthest from the station might be left without a DME indication.

9. False. These are 65 percent power settings for a Lycoming O-540-B, 235-horsepower engine. Fuel consumption is 1.7 gph less at the lower rpm, however, because a reduction in rpm reduces internal engine friction. Charles Lindbergh taught this fuel-saving technique during World War II to help pilots extend range.
