Plane Spotter
AOPA
Norse by Northwest
A first glance tells you that the hefty high-wing taildragger with the round engine up front was built for the bush. Next, savvy plane spotters check the landing gear to pin down the identification: If the main wheels adhere to stubby structures extending from the fuselage, you are on your way to logging a sighting of a 600-horsepower, 10-place Canadian Noorduyn Norseman, typically a wood-and-fabric workhorse designed by Robert Noorduyn and dating to 1935. Not every Norseman operates on conventional landing gear; those odd attach points also accommodate floats or skis.
Final Exam
Question

Does completing an instrument proficiency check (IPC) make an instrument-rated pilot current again, even if six approaches were not done during that check?
Answer
Yes. According to 14 CFR 61.57(d), a pilot may re-establish instrument currency by completing an IPC. The airman certification standards require that at least two instrument approaches be performed during an IPC.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
