AOPA, FAA to take live questions on equipping with ADS-B

Editor's note: This story was updated Aug. 15 to include the recorded video.

Join experts from AOPA and the FAA on June 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. Eastern time for an interactive discussion about why you should equip your aircraft with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Out (ADS-B Out) before the Jan. 1, 2020, compliance deadline.

AOPA will host the broadcast, titled Equip Me: A Live Conversation on All Things ADS-B, in our AOPA Live studio. The program will air live on the FAA’s Facebook page. Twitter and YouTube will also live stream the show.

AOPA Technical Editor Mike Collins and AOPA Senior Director of Airspace, Air Traffic, and Aviation Security Rune Duke will be joined by David Gray, manager of the FAA’s Surveillance Broadcast Services Program, and Jamal Wilson, portfolio manager, Surveillance & Automation Branch, to answer questions on camera about ADS-B avionics, their benefits, the FAA’s General Aviation ADS-B Rebate Program, and other issues.

Additional AOPA and FAA experts will be available off camera to respond to questions posted by viewers on social media, ensuring that most questions receive a direct response. Members can get their questions answered via AOPA's Twitter account and the FAA's Twitter account. Be sure to use #EquipMe.

Only seven months remain before the effective date of the ADS-B mandate, which requires that all aircraft must be equipped with FAA-approved ADS-B Out technology to operate in airspace where a transponder is required today.

It is estimated that thousands of aircraft owners have yet to equip their aircraft—so now is the time to act by having your questions answered and deciding which solution is appropriate for installation in your aircraft.

“Owners want a one-size-fits-all solution for ADS-B but because it can touch so many other aircraft systems, there's really no such thing,” said Collins. “We can help you sort out the options.”
