Don't come up short in technique!
While the checklist is important, solid short-field landings also demand an eye on the big picture. Watch this video from the AOPA Air Safety Institute to review.
Non-polarized sunglasses with readers
Aviators who need help with near- and long-range vision have options with Dual Eyewear sunglasses from Sporty's Pilot Shop. Non-polarized lenses allow clear views of instruments, and a variety of "reader" diopters help with short-range focus. The sunglasses are available online from $64.95.

Plane Spotter
AOPA
Vintage variant
Don't be misled by an unfamiliar designation: This vintage LC–126 strongly resembles a certain classic airplane because it is one—the military variant of the Cessna 195, built from the late 1940s through the early '50s. The U.S. Air Force flew the LC–126A, powered by a 300-horsepower Jacobs radial engine, in Arctic operations including rescue missions. Note the distinctive triple-tail configuration that allowed float or ski operations. A wing with no dihedral angle is also a clue for a plane spotter confirming a Cessna 195 sighting. Question

For IFR flight, an alternate airport is required under certain weather conditions. What are your options if the nearest legal alternate is 800 miles from the destination and the airplane doesn't carry enough fuel to get there?
Answer
The only option is not to make that planned flight. According to 14 CFR 91.167, you must have enough fuel to fly to the planned destination, then to the alternate, and then an additional 45 minutes. If that is not possible, you can't legally make the flight.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
