Meigs: The field of broken dreams

Editor's note: This article was updated April 4 with election results.

It appears that dreams of landing at one of the country’s most unique airstrips will remain just that—a dream. In a crowded mayoral race, wildcard candidate Willie Wilson, who backed reopening Meigs Field, didn’t garner enough votes to move forward in Chicago’s April 2 runoff.

Wilson finished fourth out of 14 candidates on the Feb. 26 election. But had he secured the win, it would have been a huge victory for nostalgic pilots and advocates of the airport, as March 31 marked the sixteenth year since its untimely demise. Today, Chicagoans know Meigs Field as Northerly Island, where it is primarily used as a concert venue and nature reserve.

Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot, whom Wilson endorsed, won the runoff to become Chicago’s next Mayor. Lightfoot’s campaign did not respond to AOPA’s request for comment about bringing back Meigs Field.

In any case, the city would be hard pressed to find a mayor who did more damage to general aviation pilots than then-Mayor Richard Daley in 2003, when under the cover of darkness he ordered crews to bulldoze Xs into the runway, preventing its use.
