Million-hour machine
Million-hour machine
It was 2010 when Robinson Helicopter Co. of Torrance, California, renowned for manufacturing two enduring two-bladed piston-powered models, turned to turbines, adding the five-place R66 to its lineup. The newcomer joined the two-place R22 workhorse/trainer and several two-to-four-place R44 models. The "new kid" quickly got popular: The 2,700-pound-gross R66, powered by a Rolls-Royce RR300 engine, is now a bestseller, and Robinson celebrated the R66 fleet's millionth flight hour in September. The R66 has been to the North Pole and has circumnavigated the globe "multiple times," completing one such flight over 97 days in 2018. (Photo courtesy of Robinson Helicopter.)

Question

I recently tuned in to a unicom frequency and heard a pilot ordering breakfast. Is that legal?
Answer
Aeronautical fixed stations provide communications service pertaining to safety, regularity, and economy of flight, according to FCC regulations. Although there may not be a specific prohibition regarding nonaviation chatter on a unicom frequency, slang and such dialogue, like ordering breakfast, should be avoided. Unicom is for airport advisories and traffic position reporting. Follow the Aeronautical Information Manual guidance for communication phraseology and avoid all other chatter on that frequency.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
