Airvan to the rescue
Utility aircraft are distinctive and designed to carry out a range of missions with minimal reconfiguration. They quickly adapt from charter transportation to hauling parachutists, or landing in rough spots to bring relief after a natural disaster. The 300-horsepower piston-engine-powered GippsAero GA8 Airvan, an angular, eight-place hauler built in Australia, looks the part and does the job. Airvan owner Gary Lickle of Palm Beach, Florida, recently made numerous relief flights to and from the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. (Photo courtesy of Dack Partiarca and Gary Lickle.)

Question

I was recently reviewing the instrument currency regulations, 14 CFR 61.57(c) and (d), and it appears the six-month "grace" period that used to be there is now gone. Is that correct?
Answer
No. The six-month period is still there, but the wording changed a few years ago. The current language related to this period is in 14 CFR 61.57(d): "...a person who has failed to meet the instrument experience requirements of paragraph (c) of this section for more than six calendar months may reestablish instrument currency only by completing an instrument proficiency check."

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
