Final Exam
Question

Can I do a simulated instrument flight using a safety pilot, while on a filed IFR flight with an air traffic control clearance, but in VFR conditions?
Answer
Yes, as long as one of the pilots is instrument current and legal to act as pilot in command. This practice isn't limited to instructional flights, but instrument instructors do this regularly to train their students on ATC procedures while giving them simulated instrument time and dual instruction.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
