After the checkride: Fresh catch

Fly for a shore thing

Fly for pie? Sure. A hamburger? Pancakes? Of course. But why restrain your palate when you have an airplane?

Summertime is the best time to get fresh seafood, and it’s a perfect excuse to get up in the air. Bring some of that seafood goodness home to your family. Some restaurants will deliver to an airport. If not, with the advent of ride-hailing apps, it’s easier than ever to fly to an airport, Uber to a restaurant, pick up a fresh catch, and Uber back to the airport. Then it’s a quick flight home to enjoy your bounty.

You will need appropriate gear for the mission. A generously sized cooler with plenty of ice is a must to keep seafood cool. You want to keep crustaceans alive no matter how high the temperatures get in the cockpit. A bushel basket will require a tarp to protect the back seat or baggage compartment.

Then it’s home and in the pot—no need for an hours-long drive to the beach and the additional expense of overnight accommodations.
