The difference is accuracy. For a watch to be called a chronometer, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute must first certify that it is accurate to within +6/-4 seconds per day.
When an international convention met in Paris in 1919 to discuss national aircraft registration, the first flight across the Atlantic had just been completed by the American NC-4 flying boats. The popularity of these “N-boats” led to the selection of N for U.S.-registered aircraft.
The yaw string—or slip string—is attached outside the aircraft (most often on the front of the canopy of a glider) and aligns with the relative wind to display to a pilot the degree of aircraft sideslip. It was invented by Wilbur Wright and first used on the Wright brothers’ 1902 glider.
