It’s 2020 and the Jetsons’ cartoon promise of flying small individual aircraft still is not a reality. But wait. How about a flying motorcycle? Jetpack Aviation, a California-based vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) developer—which also produced a personal jetpack that flew around the Statue of Liberty in 2015—is taking $10,000 preorders for its Speeder, a “self-stabilizing, jet turbine-powered,” single-pilot flying motorcycle. The company plans to manufacture only 20 of the $380,000 “recreational” Speeders; the “world’s first flying motorcycle” is already in development for use by emergency and military personnel. Because of its size and speed, EMTs can use it to reach patients quicker and the military can use it to extract personnel faster, the company says. If you’ve got an extra $10,000 handy, place your preorder now.
