Ramp Appeal: Piper Pilot 100

A classic trainer updated

You’ve probably flown a Piper Cherokee or Archer at some point—and the Piper Pilot 100 looks and flies similarly to those venerable trainers. But it’s a brand-new spin, so to speak, on a successful training platform.

The 100 series, introduced in 2018, is intended to give flight schools a chance to purchase a new aircraft at a lower price point than most new airplanes. Its $259,000 base price reflects a stripped-down approach: no baggage door, no sun visors, no right-side instruments; two side windows instead of three. Two seats or—in the case of the Piper Pilot 100i, an instrument version—two seats up front and one in the back. The trim exterior and interior are matched with a panel that includes a Garmin G3X Touch with a 10-inch primary flight display.

You can take out the seats and windows, but the airframe is still Piper—a smooth-handling, capable airplane that has trained generations of pilots and produces passenger-pleasing landings with seemingly little effort.
