From the Flight Deck series keeps runway operations fresh

Watch taxiway and runway operations from the pilot’s perspective at some of the nation’s trickiest airports in the FAA’s From the Flight Deck video series that identifies hot spots and other safety sensitive areas.

The FAA has released 27 videos that feature footage from cameras mounted inside the flight deck as well as airport diagrams and other graphics to show hot spots. Some of the airports include Philadelphia International Airport, Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, Boeing Field/King County International Airport in Seattle, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, and Phoenix Deer Valley Airport.

In addition, the FAA addresses wrong surface landings and wrong direction intersection takeoffs, hold short procedures, and winter weather challenges.

Most videos range from about four to eight minutes and can be useful not only to pilots who plan to fly into the featured airports but also to pilots who want to brush up on runway operations or student pilots who want to study airport signage and taxi clearances and procedures.

The AOPA Air Safety Institute also offers runway safety materials including an online course, videos, a safety quiz, runway flash cards, and an ATC light gun signal card.
