Bombardier to use SAF for all flight ops through agreement with Signature

Bombardier will cover all its flight operations with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Signature Aviation starting in January, the company said October 17 during the National Business Aviation Association Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida.

The companies claimed that this multiyear agreement represents the first of its scope for a business aviation original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel use in Bombardier’s flight operations by about 25 percent. Bombardier will purchase the fuel from Signature through the Signature Renew Book and Claim system, which “ensures rigorous accounting of greenhouse gas emission reductions while optimizing the logistics,” according to the companies.

The agreement covers Bombardier’s product and testing certification operations in Canada; ferry flights between Toronto and Montreal to perform aircraft completions; customer demonstrations, primarily staged in Hartford, Connecticut; and after-service check flights conducted from several locations around the globe, including locations in the United States, Germany, and Singapore.

“This is simply put the fastest path to make a meaningful net reduction in GHG,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Bombardier executive vice president of services and support, and corporate strategy. “More of our customers are using SAF and so must Bombardier. We must all share in the responsibility for a sustainable future.”

Signature CEO Tony Lefebvre said during the session that the company has grown its SAF footprint to 17 global airports, or around 10 percent of its network of private aviation terminals. According to Lefebvre, Signature accounts for 8 percent of global SAF sales.

“The agreement announced today is an excellent example of how any fleet operator can tackle the challenges of aircraft emissions,” said Lefebvre. “This partnership provides a unique opportunity to stimulate the infrastructure for sustainable aviation fuel and increase long-term adoption.”
