ASI’s ‘Focused Flight Review’

Improving pilot proficiency and flight safety

The AOPA Air Safety Institute has been at the forefront of promoting aviation safety, and our Focused Flight Review (FFR) initiative serves as a testament to this commitment. The FFR is an innovative learning tool designed to address individual pilot needs to bolster flight safety.

The FFR aims to improve pilot proficiency and flight safety and renew enthusiasm for flying. Rather than being one-size-fits-all, the review is tailored to address individual pilot needs, making it unique and practical.

ASI’s FFR provides a pilot nearing their 24-calendar month required skills check with a curriculum that works in conjunction with the FAA-mandated flight review. The FFR adds value to the flight review by identifying and addressing areas of potential weakness in a pilot’s skill set. It uses a range of safety-related topics, fostering a greater understanding of safe flight practices.

Pilots can select from various profiles pertinent to their specific flight operations, proficiency gaps, or interests. Through an online interactive platform, pilots can choose modules of relevance to them. These topics range from “Positive Aircraft Control” or “Mountains and Backcountry Flying” to advanced profiles like “IFR Proficiency” and “Beyond the Basics.” Those topics then become the focus of the in-flight training session with an instructor.

The FFR program embraces a learner-centric approach. It considers a pilot’s flight experience and interests, enabling the development of relevant skills and knowledge. Personalized scenarios based on chosen topics encourage pilots to apply their new knowledge to actual situations, creating an effective training experience.

Simultaneously, flight instructors are supplied with resources to help deliver effective and tailored in-flight instruction aligned with the chosen profiles of each pilot. This collaborative learning environment fosters an engaging and enriching experience for both parties.

The overall goal of the FFR program is to promote an ongoing commitment to flight safety among pilots. This aligns with one of the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s philosophies that every flight is an opportunity for learning and improvement. The FFR serves as a tool to foster this learning, encouraging pilots to continually evaluate and enhance their skills.
