The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new video from its Early Analysis series providing an initial examination of a recent accident.
On June 4, a Cessna Citation 560V crashed in the Virginia mountains. Sadly, the lone pilot and three passengers died in the accident. No one on the ground was hurt.
The pilot took off from an uncontrolled airfield in Tennessee, intending to land in Islip, New York. Once airborne, he acquired his clearance and according to national media reports, 15 minutes after departure, Air Traffic Control lost communication with the pilot.
“In Early Analysis: Cessna Citation Jet Interception Over Nation’s Capital Ends in Tragedy, the AOPA Air Safety Institute wants to help pilots understand what is known about the accident as we look at factors that are likely to be a subject of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, and what we can learn as general aviation pilots to fly safer," said AOPA's ASI Senior Vice President Richard McSpadden.
McSpadden continued, “It appears there are two potential factors that may be the cause of this accident: hypoxia from lack of cockpit pressurization or a pilot medical issue.”
Early Analysis videos provide an initial assessment of prominent mishaps that generate large public interest and may indicate important safety lessons for the general aviation community.
