I recently had the opportunity to try Airtext, an airborne SMS messaging system (you and I call them texts) that lowers the cost of texting by avoiding full internet access for passengers. Airtext uses a clever combination of the Iridium Next satellite network, a hardware unit the size of a paperback book, Bluetooth, and passenger cellphones to provide a seamless texting experience between those on an aircraft and those on the ground.
Airtext offers four units, each with increasing capabilities: AirtextLT (portable, texting only), AirtextLT+ (portable, texting and email), Airtext Classic (installed, texting only) and Airtext+ (installed, texting, emails, and voice calls). The portable AirtextLT unit I tested weighs about one pound and is powered by a battery pack that can be swapped out, if necessary. It is connected to an existing Iridium phone antenna and can serve six users simultaneously.
Upon boarding, passengers are given an Airtext quick start guide that instructs them to download the Airtext app (available in iPhone or Android versions), enable Bluetooth, and begin sending texts. It really is that simple. Importantly, you must initiate a text to your contact’s cellphone number, and then they can respond. Those on the ground are not able to send texts to your cellphone number as they normally would. Instead, they’ll be responding to a text message from Airtext. Although there’s no option to add attachments, you can add emojis and use your voice to dictate a text. Keep the app on your phone until the next flight and your texting history will remain in the app.
The AirtextLT hardware costs $4,950 and, since it’s portable, no installation is required. Airtext+ costs $17,950 plus installation. A $500 per year data plan covers the Iridium and Airtext network connection and includes the first 2,500 text messages. Additional messages cost 5 cents each. Email and voice call services are extra.
The AirtextLT offers the ability to stay connected with friends, family, and business associates anytime you’re on board, at any altitude, and at a reasonable price point.
