AOPA’s Air Safety Institute Releases FAQs Clarifying FAA Final Rule on Removal of CFI Certificate Expiration Dates

FREDERICK, Md.,—The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) has released an online document clarifying the FAA’s final rule that removes expiration dates on CFI certificates.

The rule, which aims to streamline the certification process, signals an important change for certificated flight instructors across the nation.

“The AOPA Air Safety Institute wants to clarify the final rule and help avoid confusion among CFIs renewing their certificates before and after the rule goes into effect,” said AOPA’s ASI Senior Vice President Mike Ginter.

Ginter continued, “The FAQs explain key differences for certificates issued before December 1, 2024, and those issued on or after December 1, 2024.”

“We also address the new three-month reinstatement window all CFIs can benefit from as of December 1, 2024, and how it affects CFI privileges during that time,” Ginter concluded.
