uAvionix enhances surface awareness at Florida airports

Aviation technology company uAvionix said it entered contracts to install its FlightLine surface situational awareness system at six major airports in Florida. The new equipment is expected to be operational before Thanksgiving to help increase safety during the historically busy holiday travel period.

The company, which has operations in Big Fork, Montana, and Leesburg, Virginia, is working with partner Capital Sciences, a Herndon, Virginia, aviation communication and surveillance company, to support the FAA’s Surface Awareness Initiative. The FAA program aims to enhance safety on runways, ramps, and other airport surfaces by helping air traffic controllers, aircraft crews, and ground vehicle operators maintain awareness of ground traffic and avoid potential conflicts.

The latest airports receiving the new FlightLine system are Tampa International Airport, Jacksonville International Airport, Orlando Sanford International Airport, Daytona Beach International Airport, Miami Executive Airport, and Palm Beach International Airport. Earlier this year uAvionix delivered similar equipment to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and Indianapolis International Airport.

“We are thrilled to expand our collaboration with the FAA to enhance surface awareness at key airports in Florida and across the nation,” said Christian Ramsey, uAvionix’s chief commercial officer. “The rapid deployment of our FlightLine capability at Indianapolis and Austin this past summer and its proven ability to support air traffic controllers set the stage for our efforts this Fall, and we are pleased to bring greater awareness to major airports ahead of the busy Holiday flying season.”

FlightLine provides aircraft and surface movement data in real time to reduce the risk of runway incursions while improving operational efficiency. The system is on display this week at the National Air Traffic Controllers Association annual Communicating for Safety conference in Las Vegas.
