Organization honoring pilot killed on 9/11 holds annual 5K

Funds flight training scholarships

The LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Foundation, named in honor of the first officer aboard United Airlines Flight 93, will hold its second annual 5K run and one-mile walk on September 7, in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Since its first scholarships were awarded in 2003, the foundation has helped more than 30 aspiring pilots learn to fly. Many recipients have gone on to fly for the airlines and military, while others used their flight training to gain valuable experience while working in airport management and crew scheduling.

The foundation started the annual run at the Memorial Sports Complex in Evesham, New Jersey, last year and raised $22,000 from registrations, donations, and sponsorships. Organizers hope to double the number of runners this year and offer a virtual option for anyone wanting to participate who cannot attend in person.

The next scholarship application period opens October 31 and closes on January 31.

United 93 was the fourth aircraft to be hijacked in the attacks. The hijackers took control of the aircraft after two other aircraft struck the World Trade Center towers, and moments before the third hit the Pentagon. towers, and moments before the third hit the Pentagon.

As a result, passengers learned of the other hijackings and fought the hijackers. The airplane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The hijackers’ intended target is believed to have been the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

The Flight 93 National Memorial will also mark the twenty-fourth anniversary of the attacks with a public observance on September 11. The 30-minute Moment of Remembrance will begin at 9:45 a.m. and conclude with the reading of names and a moment of silence, followed by a wreath-laying and gate-closing ceremony at the Wall of Names.

For the third year, the National Park Service and Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial will offer “Teach to Remember 9/11,” a virtual program for schools across the country, which will be available from September 8 through 12.
