Proposed AOPA bylaws published for member review

The most significant update to AOPA's governance since its founding moved forward with the publication of proposed bylaw revisions that members will vote on at a special meeting on September 19.

The Saturday special meeting may be the last voting session held before AOPA implements online voting to elect trustees, which is not possible under the current bylaws. It will be held at the National Aviation Community Center on the grounds of Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland, and continue a process undertaken by the board led since March by Chairman Luke Wippler, who invited member feedback on proposed changes to the association's governance during the annual meeting in May.

Members elected two new trustees to the 11-member board at the May meeting, and the board has worked with staff to expedite governance changes.

The special meeting of members stands to advance the modernization of AOPA governance, empowering members to nominate trustees, establishing new qualifications to serve as trustees, and implementing trustee term limits—pending approval of members who are encouraged to attend, or appoint a voting proxy if unable to do so. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., with lunch to follow. Members may review the current and proposed bylaws online ahead of the vote.
