Your medical questions answered

AOPA’s Pilot Information Center is here to help

AOPA works tirelessly for revised policies to keep healthy pilots flying safer, longer. But beyond the advocacy side, we’re also here to help you through the process. AOPA’s Pilot Information Center medical certification specialists are on call Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time, to help answer your medical certification questions.

The FAA medical process can be daunting and confusing, especially if it’s your first time applying for a medical. There’s also countless amounts of advice out on the internet, often conflicting, about best practices when heading to see your aviation medical examiner (AME). Even if you’ve been getting medical certificates for decades, processes and regulations can change and might leave you stumped.

Whether you’re a first-time applicant or long-time medical holder moving to BasicMed, the AOPA medical certification staff can answer your questions and connect you to the resources you need. It’s always good advice to “preflight your medical” (see “Preflight Your Medical,” December 2025 AOPA Pilot) and go into the process prepared. PIC medical staff can guide you through the process and make sure it is as painless as possible.

Whether it’s the airman medical certification process, allowed and disallowed medical conditions, medical application guidance, or even locations of medical examiners, the AOPA medical team is equipped and happy to help.
