CAU brings Boeing CBTA to students
Becoming a pilot requires more than mastering the aircraft. California Aeronautical University’s collaboration with Boeing helps students develop the real-world skills that contribute to safer, more confident flight operations.
Learning how to take off, land, and maneuver an aircraft is a critical part of flight training. But ask a professional pilot what contributes to a safe and successful flight, and the answer goes well beyond stick-and-rudder skills.
Pilots make hundreds of decisions throughout every flight. They must communicate clearly, manage distractions, adapt to changing conditions, and work effectively with others. These skills are just as important as knowing how to operate the aircraft itself.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, training organizations are placing greater emphasis on helping future pilots develop these types of competencies alongside traditional flight training. One approach is Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA), which focuses on the knowledge, skills, and behaviors pilots use in both routine and unexpected situations.
Recently, California Aeronautical University (CAU) became the first U.S. flight school selected to deploy Boeing's CBTA Learning Library, giving students access to Boeing-developed learning resources focused on core competencies that commercial pilots use every day.
Rather than focusing solely on whether a student can complete a task, CBTA encourages students to think about how they approach that task. Can they identify a developing problem before it becomes a larger issue? Can they communicate effectively when conditions change? Can they manage workload and make thoughtful decisions when faced with multiple options?
The goal is to help students build the habits, judgment, and confidence that support safe flying throughout their careers.
The Boeing CBTA Learning Library focuses on core competencies including leadership and teamwork, communication, situational awareness, workload management, decision-making, and threat and error management.
At CAU, these resources will complement existing flight and academic training, helping students connect what they learn in the classroom, simulator, and aircraft to real-world operational scenarios.
