Safety Spotlight: VFR into IMC

Zoomed image
  • An instrument rating is no guarantee against an accident.
  • Understand weather trends that reduce ceilings and visibility.
  • Always have an out and know your “bailout direction” where you can head for clear weather.
  • Discuss your plan with another experienced pilot or CFI if there’s any uncertainty.
  • Have a contingency plan and stick with it—don’t compromise.
  • Be wary of “just taking a look.” It’s hard to come back once you’ve gained momentum.
  • Use ATC services and declare an emergency if you enter IMC.
  • Keep calm and transition quickly to cockpit instruments.
  • Avoid sudden movements, especially head movement.
  • Practice real-world VFR into IMC encounters and escapes with a qualified CFI.
