FAA updates airman certification standards
The FAA has revised the airman certification standards for the private and commercial certificates and instrument rating for airplanes and remote pilot certificate, to include some new regulations such as those accommodating BasicMed privileges and limitations. Additional changes include edits to account for different types of hypoxia and giving the evaluator discretion to ask for a full aerodynamic stall. READ MORE ›
Diamond Aircraft introduces aerobatic trainer
Austria-based Diamond Aircraft Industries announced the maiden flight and completion of the basic flight program of the DART-550, a 550-horsepower, 247-knot, two-place turboprop. The single-engine carbon-fiber turboprop aerobatic trainer is expected to be at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom in July. READ MORE ›
AOPA seeks aviation curriculum specialist, marketing manager
AOPA is looking to hire an aviation curriculum specialist for the association’s High School Initiative, as well as a marketing manager. The curriculum specialist should have prior experience in formal education, a bachelor’s degree, and a pilot certificate or advanced ground instruction. The marketing manager will work with a cross-functional team to drive new membership growth. A strong digital background is preferred, along with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or equivalent experience. See the online listings for additional information or to apply.
Police say flight instructor tried to deport foreign student
A California flight instructor and his assistant were arrested in May for allegedly kidnapping one of their students with the intention of deporting him back to China. Redding, California, police arrested Jonathan McConkey and Kelsi Hoser, employed with IASCO Flight Training in Redding, on suspicion of conspiracy and kidnapping. Redding police said the pair were trying to send the student back to China because his English wasn’t good enough to safely communicate while flying, according to the Huffington Post.
Delta, Lake Superior College partner
Delta Air Lines recently selected Lake Superior College in Duluth, Minnesota, as an approved college partner for training future aircraft maintenance technicians (AMTs). Delta said it sees a “continued high demand” for maintenance personnel for many years to come. The airline works with 48 other AMT programs across the United States.
East Coast tech school packing for airplane build
Students from the Harkness Career and Technical Center in Cheektowaga, New York, are packing for Washington state to build an airplane. The team beat 130 other schools in the sixth annual 2018 GAMA Build-A-Plane aircraft design challenge. Four Harkness students, one teacher, and a chaperone will travel to help build an aircraft at Glasair, Aviation, in Arlington, Washington, June 17 to 30. READ MORE ›
