Emergency Procedures

GO BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK—FLY THE AIRPLANE AND STAY IN CONTROL WITH THIS SAFETY SPOTLIGHT

There’s no way to be totally prepared for every emergency. Despite our best intentions, sometimes things just go wrong. But practice, planning, and good judgment can improve our odds of dealing with an emergency for the best outcome. Remember, first do no harm—fly the airplane and stay in control. Then assess the situation and troubleshoot. Taking drastic action is usually not needed—it can make things worse. That’s easier said than done when the engine quits, or you discover a fire!

This safety spotlight looks at ways to handle those critical "up here, wishing you were down there" situations as safely as possible.

You’ll review:

  • Why you should brief every flight
  • Engine failure strategies
  • Electrical and engine fire strategies
  • How to prepare for vacuum and electrical failures
  • Why you should declare an emergency
  • How to prepare for an off-airport landing
  • Survival preparedness
