FAA withdraws proposed changes to Tampa Class B airspace

The FAA has withdrawn a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would have raised the floor of the Tampa Florida Class B airspace over MacDill Air Force Base allowing better GA access to the airspace area. AOPA had filed comments favoring the change in November 1998. However, increased military and security operations have expanded the utilization of MacDill AFB. Base air traffic has increased (instead of declining as was predicted) over the past two years.

"While we are disappointed that the proposed changes have been withdrawn, we are sensitive to the need to maintain the current airspace structure considering the increased military traffic at MacDill," said Heidi Williams, AOPA manager of air traffic.
