But general aviation has never been about exclusivity. One of the things we most anticipate after getting our ticket is taking someone up with us--a friend or family member--to share the exhilaration we experience each time our airplane's wheels leave the ground. We're not looking to shut out the folks who "just don't get it," but rather introduce more people to the joy of flight so that they, too, can experience what we have come to love.
That's why AOPA has expanded its successful mentoring program, Project Pilot. In order to keep general aviation strong in the future, we need more student pilots today. And we know that enthusiastic new pilots can be some of GA's most effective advocates.
This may sound like a lot of work, but it's really quite easy. Most likely you already know a future pilot: a friend in the neighborhood or at work, or even a family member who has always loved flying. Talk to them about learning to fly, then sign up for AOPA Project Pilot.
Even if you don't have a specific person in mind to mentor, there are student pilots looking for mentors who are waiting for you. It will only take you a few minutes a week to be a mentor, because you aren't acting as an instructor--you're there as a flying friend who's been where your student pilot has been and can offer helpful insights into the hurdles that most student pilots face. You can be a mentor over the telephone, via e-mail, or in person, as your time and schedule permits.
