The Army has proposed to establish a new restricted area, R-2502A, at Fort Irwin, Calif., and modify the Silver Military Operations Area (MOA) as part of an expansion of the Army National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin.
The proposed R-2502A would extend from the surface to 16,000 feet msl and would restrict airspace above the expanded land maneuver area created to support the training center. AOPA plans to file comments on the FAA’s notice of proposed rulemaking, and members can submit comments to AOPA and directly to the FAA regarding what impact this would have on their operations.
“AOPA wants to make sure the impact on pilots in the area is minimized,” said AOPA Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs Rob Hackman, “and we’re looking for pilots to help us do that by sending us their concerns.”
The proposal also would modify the Silver MOA in the vicinity of the NTC because the proposed restricted airspace would infringe on the MOA. An expansion of special-use airspace could impact flights in the area.
