Thrill from Brazil

Editor at Large Tom Horne headed south to Brazil to fly Embraer’s new Phenom 100, braving the winter rains in São José dos Campos. Horne flew the number-one prototype for two solid IMC days, really getting a feel for the aircraft, even though the prototype was bare bones and the weather was awful. Later he was given a tour of the Phenom completion center in Gavião Peixoto. There he saw a newly completed airplane and its roomy, stylish interior. Little giant

Associate Editor Jill W. Tallman loves to fly and really loves the small single-engine aircraft that are typical of general aviation, so she especially liked flying the light sport category Tecnam Eaglet. Many of our writers travel to far-flung places to test-fly an aircraft, but Tallman only had to make the one-hour trek to the Chesapeake Bay from AOPA headquarters in Frederick, Maryland. Over Africa

Journalist Miles O’Brien regretfully left his full-time career at CNN last fall but has discovered that freelance life has its benefits. O’Brien and his wife, Sandy, accepted an offer to film the work of the Kenya Wildlife Service in Africa. Miles observed the intense pilot training at a weeklong clinic taught by notable American instructors Patty Wagstaff and John and Martha King, while Sandy photographed the action.
