Airport Support Network volunteers from the Kansas City metro area shared ideas and discussed aviation issues affecting their region last week in a meeting designed to strengthen the partnership between AOPA and local pilots.
AOPA Vice President of Local Airport Advocacy Bill Dunn met with eight ASN volunteers in Missouri to discuss a number of important aviation issues, such as the Large Aircraft Security Program, the recently enacted economic stimulus package, and airport development projects. They also discussed concerns over sole source FBO services and a proposed privatization of Kansas City International Airport.
“Local advocacy is a partnership between local pilots and AOPA,” Dunn said. “These meetings provide an important opportunity to exchange ideas and technical expertise between AOPA and local ASN volunteers.”
Among the topics of conversation were significant general aviation development projects at the Kansas City downtown airport, including new hangars and a new FBO due to begin operations from a temporary facility in April 2009. Dunn and the volunteers discussed FAA airport funding under the Airport Improvement Program and state block grant funding in Missouri. Dunn said AOPA is committed to supporting the system of volunteers that helps protect airports nationwide.
“We appreciate the efforts of ASN volunteers,” Dunn said. “Whenever possible, AOPA senior staff members are out in the field with them providing insight, updates, and guidance on airport related issues; seeking their input; and supporting their advocacy efforts locally.”
