Owners of Cook Airfield, Inc., in Derby, Kan., got the go-ahead July 21 to lengthen the airport’s runway by 1,000 feet. The airport owners requested that the county vacate a road south of the airport in order to expand.
During the July 21 hearing by the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners, 15 residents spoke in favor of the expansion, while 11 spoke against it. Ultimately, the board voted 3 to 2 to approve the runway extension.
This should encourage more aviation service providers to base at the airport and bring more business to the area. AOPA had written to the board, expressing its support for the growing general aviation airport.
