Navy sets public meetings on possible training facility expansion

The Navy has set two public informational meetings as it begins to prepare an environmental impact statement in connection with proposed new training activities at the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility near Boardman, Ore.

Two alternatives the Navy is considering would bring increases in training activities, and the introduction of new weapon systems, potentially resulting in changes to the special-use airspace that includes military operations areas and restricted areas in the proximity of Boardman Airport. A third alternative would bring no increase in activity.

AOPA is closely monitoring development of this proposal to ensure that general aviation’s concerns are shared, and will submit formal comments following a review of the Navy’s environmental impact submission. Members are encouraged to attend one of the Navy’s informational meetings to hear details of the proposals’ impact on GA flight operations, and to provide written comments.

The public meetings will take place Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Port of Morrow Conference Center, Riverfront Room, 2 Marine Drive, Boardman, Ore., and Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Hermiston Conference Center, Rotary Room, 415 S. Highway 395, Hermiston, Ore.

Pilots may also send written comments to Mrs. Amy Burt, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Northwest, 1101 Tautog Circle Suite 203, Silverdale, WA 98315, postmarked by Nov. 15.
