AOPA submitted comments on Oct. 4 opposing as baseless the proposed deactivation of Victor airway 284 between the Sea Isle (SIE) and Cedar Lake (VCN) vortacs in eastern New Jersey. The FAA sought deactivation citing low demand for the airway, and on cost-effectiveness grounds, according to the notice of the action in the Federal Register.
AOPA pointed out in its comments that with no continuing or routine expense associated with maintaining an existing airway, there can be no cost savings from deactivating V-284. Victor airways remain a popular means of navigation for IFR and VFR pilots, making deactivation of even an infrequently used one a loss for the entire National Airspace System.
Members are encouraged to submit comments to the FAA on the proposal. Identify both docket numbers FAA-2010-0813 and Airspace Docket 09-AEA-12. Comments must be received by Oct. 18.
