From surviving in-flight fires to ditching, find out how to stay calm and work through emergencies during a series of educational seminars at AOPA Aviation Summit, Sept. 22 through 24 in Hartford, Conn.
Dr. Ian Blair Fries will discuss gliding techniques, managing in-flight fires, limiting injuries in forced landings, and safely exiting the aircraft after an emergency landing in “How to save your life in an aircraft accident” at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23.
For pilots who fly over water, aviation survival expert Doug Ritter’s seminar, “Ditching and water survival,” is a must-see. Ritter will discuss ditching, egress, water survival, signaling for help, hypothermia, the psychological aspects of water survival, and more. The seminar is offered at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 and at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 23.
While pilots are all taught the procedure for spin recovery, it’s not something that is practiced often. Learn how your aircraft will behave in a spin and what to do to recover during the “Spin myths” multimedia seminar Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.

To learn how to stay safe in high-risk situations, listen to airshow pilot Mike Goulian as he presents “Safety…In high-risk environments.” He will share the safety adjustments he makes to manage risk, in hopes of helping pilots develop their own personal safety techniques. Goulian’s seminar runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 24.
