Raising pilot awareness and reducing pilot deviations in the Leesburg Maneuvering Area are the goals of an informational meeting scheduled for Feb. 26 at the Leesburg, Va., Executive Airport.
As AOPA reported on Nov. 18, the FAA, acting on concerns about continued and increasing violations of the maneuvering area rules trending higher, has reached out to pilots in hopes of avoiding a future suspension of operations in the airspace.
AOPA is a sponsor of the event in partnership with the Leesburg Airport Commission, the FAA’s Washington, D.C., Flight Standards District Office, the FAA Safety Team, the FAA’s National Capital Region Coordination Center, and Potomac Tracon.
Two informational and learning sessions will be held in the airport terminal lobby: a morning session from 9 to 11 a.m., and a repeat session from 1 to 3 p.m.
All pilots who operate in and around the Leesburg Maneuvering Area are encouraged to attend one of the sessions. Pilots will learn about the seriousness of the situation, review the latest notam and special flight rules area changes, and receive guidance and tips for maintaining compliance and transponder use. Pilots also will hear points of view from the security community and tracon controllers. Learning resources that are available to pilots to reduce pilot deviations will also be reviewed.
