Don't be a mush mouth, communicate with ATC like a pro

Do you say what you mean or use proper phraseology when transmitting on the radio? AOPA Pilot editors Tom Horne and Dave Hirschman debated two ends of the spectrum earlier this year, but you can find out from the pros—air traffic controllers—exactly what to say and how to say it during seminars at AOPA Aviation Summit.

Go “behind the scope” as controllers share their perspective on each phase of flight in the seminar “Takeoff to Touchdown: From the Controller's Perspective.” Learn what pilots and controllers can expect from each other, and get expert tips for improving your radio communication, with Andy Marosvari of the National Safety Committee of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) on Friday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in the AOPA Learning Pavilion.

Harnessing communications for weather avoidance will be the subject of the seminar “Getting ATC's Help to Avoid Hazardous Weather.” Find out how much weather-avoidance assistance controllers can really offer. Learn how the tools and capabilities can vary at different types of facilities and how to communicate effectively with ATC in order to put safety first, with Marosvari on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 4:30 to 5 p.m., at the AOPA Learning Pavilion in the exhibit hall of the Connecticut Convention Center.

Another seminar at the AOPA Learning Pavilion, “Q&A with Northeast ATC” also focuses on communications, airspace, and routings. Hear local air traffic controllers explain the ins and outs of the area's airspace configuration, why you won't always get a direct route to your destination, and many other insights to safe and efficient flying in the Northeast. This is the place to ask the questions you've always wanted to ask. The session will be moderated by Danny Aguerre, pilot/controller liaison for the NATCA National Safety Committee. There will be two sessions: Thursday, Sept. 22, and Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

Wondering why you aren't cleared direct for a particular route in the Northeast? Interested in finding out how ATC can help you deal with challenges like fast-moving weather and congested airspace? Attend the seminar “Tips from Controllers: Northeast Focus” and get the answers to these questions (plus many more) from Northeast-based air traffic controllers. Join moderator Steve McKenzie of the NATCA National Safety Committee Thursday, Sept. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m. in Convention Center rooms 11 through 13, or Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. in Convention Center rooms 24 through 26.
