Disaster-relief charitable organization Bahamas Habitat has been nominated for a prestigious nonprofit sector award for flying missions to provide clean drinking water to more than 143,800 people in earthquake-devastated Haiti.
The Cary, N.C.-based nonprofit that flies general aviation aircraft to carry out continuing relief operations in the Caribbean was nominated for a 2012 Classy Award. The awards are presented annually in 16 categories by StayClassy Inc., a service provider to the nonprofit industry that describes its annual awards presentation program as “the largest philanthropic awards show in the country.” It debuted in 2009.
Bahamas Habitat was nominated in the disaster relief and international aid category for flying 12 missions in 2011 “with technicians and equipment to establish over 20 clean drinking water sites serving 143,810 people,” said a story about the charity on StayClassy Inc.’s awards nominations website.
The category winner will be the organization whose work “has provided the most comfort during times of crisis around the globe,” the organization said.
StayClassy will determine five regional finalists in each of four regions of the country in the 16 nomination categories by July 8.
From July 9 to July 26, the public can vote for a favorite candidate in each category. Regional winners will be picked based on the public’s ballots and evaluation by a panel of past award winners by July 31.
The Classy Awards Leadership Council will then pick the national award winners in the 16 categories. The winners will be announced Sept. 22 at the Classy Awards Weekend in San Diego, Calif.
