AOPA AV8RS announces new youth scholarship program

AOPA AV8RS ScholarshipThe AOPA AV8RS youth program has unveiled a program that will award up to $20,000 in scholarships. The scholarship program, funded by the AOPA Foundation through donations from AOPA Insurance Services and Sporty’s Pilot Shop, helps outstanding students ages 13 through 18 accomplish their aviation goals.

The scholarship program is open to all AV8RS members who are pursuing an aviation-related goal, including working on a primary pilot’s certificate; studying in an aviation/aerospace field through an accredited aviation program at a college or university, technical school, or aviation academy; or attending an aviation or aerospace camp.

Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: be a current AOPA AV8RS member from the date of the scholarship application through the date it is awarded; be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident; have parent or guardian approval if under 18 years of age; and be in good standing in his or her respective high school, college, university, or technical school.

If applying for flight training assistance, applicants must be a current student pilot working toward an initial sport, recreational, or private pilot certificate and not have completed the FAA practical test (checkride) at the time of application.

If applying for assistance toward a field of study in aviation or aerospace, applicants must have been accepted or currently enrolled in an aviation/aerospace program at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational technical school.

If applying to attend an aviation or aerospace camp, applicants must be recommended by an educator (school administrator, teacher, or guidance counselor) to attend a formal aviation or aerospace camp with a curriculum that incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math.

All scholarship awards will be paid directly to the approved flight school, college, technical school, aviation academy/high school, or aviation camp. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31, with the scholarships being awarded on Feb. 7, 2014. Get more details about the scholarship opportunity.
