Liberty University aviation program to launch affiliate

Liberty University School of Aeronautics in Lynchburg, Va., is opening an affiliate program at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

The school of aeronautics will offer online courses for students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in aeronautics. Flight training will be provided through Freedom Aviation, which also provides flight instruction for the program at Lynchburg Regional/Preston Glenn Field.

Newport News was selected as the first site for the affiliate program because of its proximity—within 50 miles of eight military bases, according to Dave Young, dean of the school of aeronautics. The school of aeronautics offers a specialization in military aviation as well as commercial/corporate and mission aviation.

In a related announcement, Liberty University said its school of aeronautics has formed a new partnership with the Denbigh High School Aviation Academy, based out of Newport News/Williamsburg International, to offer prospective aircraft mechanics flight training and college course credit toward an airframe-and-powerplant certificate through its online learning program.

“We have much room for growth and visions of expanding into the public school networks, where we can start an aviation mentorship program early on,” Young said in a press release. “This effort is part of a strategic initiative to introduce the possibilities of an aviation career into the minds of young people, initially at the high school level, but expanding even into elementary and middle schools.”
