Garmin updates software, prices wx services

Garmin messaging systemGarmin International has a GTN software update 5.0 that offers customers terrain awareness and warning system alerts, allows pilots to meet ADS-B Out requirements when using a compatible third-party transponder, and includes scheduled message alerts such as “switch fuel tanks.”

The company also has come up with a worldwide weather pricing plan for those using a GSR 56 and a compatible display, and offers position reporting services enabling their data to be displayed on providers such as FlightAware.com.

The latest GTN software has received TSO approval and is available from Garmin dealers as a free upgrade, although installation prices may apply. GTN was introduced two years ago and allows operators to access more airports using WAAS LPV approaches, display of weather radar, and to meet terrain awareness requirements worldwide.

Garmin has come up with a simplified worldwide weather pricing plan and a new position reporting system, both using Garmin global connectivity services. The weather pricing system offers predictability of month-to-month charges (all-inclusive plans start at $100 a month), while the position reporting system allows owners to use Garmin avionics they already have. Position reporting can assist fleet operators, flight schools, and others on the ground to better track their aircraft.Garmin messaging system
