The authorization "initiates formal FAA flight evaluation of the Vision SF50 type design, airworthiness, performance and handling properties," said the Duluth, Minnesota-based manufacturer.
The process "allows Cirrus to move forward with FAA Conformity Inspections and Certification Flight Tests with an FAA pilot on board the aircraft, one of the final elements needed for Type Certification."
Entering the TIA phase emphasizes the "maturity" of the Vision SF50 development, said Pat Waddick, president of innovation and operations at Cirrus Aircraft, and highlights FAA confidence "in our ability to cross the finish line."
The company reiterated its goal of achieving type certification by the end of 2015, with deliveries to customers "shortly thereafter."
The Vision SF50 jet has 550 production positions reserved. The aircraft will provide "a new personal and regional business transportation solution," Cirrus said.
In May, the company announced that sales, deliveries, and other customer services will be based at a new flagship Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
"Our customers and the entire aviation industry should be excited—the Vision Jet is on its way," Waddick said.
