TFR planned in DC for nuclear security meeting

A TFR will be in place over the Washington, D.C., area March 31 and April 1.

A temporary flight restriction (TFR) will be in effect in the Washington, D.C., area on March 31 and April 1 during a meeting of international officials on nuclear security.

Restrictions that will be in effect during the Nuclear Security Summit 2016—in addition to the procedures normally required for operations in the Washington, D.C., Special Flight Rules Area and Flight Restricted Zone—will include the suspension of traffic pattern operations at some area airports, and prohibitions on unmanned aircraft operations, flight training, practice approaches, and other operations, as described in the notam.

The VIP notam currently lists the period during which the added restrictions will be in effect as from March 31 at 7 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to April 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Pilots are urged to check frequently for updates and changes to effective times and operational requirements of the notam.

The Nuclear Security Summit 2016 “will continue to provide a forum for leaders to engage with each other and reinforce our commitment at the highest levels to securing nuclear materials,” according to the summit’s website.

The first Nuclear Security Summit was held in Washington, D.C., in 2010, followed by summits in Seoul, South Korea, in 2012 and The Hague in 2014. The meetings “have achieved tangible improvements in the security of nuclear materials and stronger international institutions that support nuclear security.”

Pilots are strongly encouraged to contact their local flight service station prior to flight to ensure they have the latest TFR information.
