FAA alerts aircraft operators to fire extinguisher recall
The FAA is urging pilots, mechanics, and operators of general aviation aircraft to determine if a recalled Kidde fire extinguisher is installed in their aircraft, and replace it with an airworthy fire extinguisher.
The agency made the recommendation in a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) issued Nov. 21, noting that many GA pilots and operators may be unaware of the product recall.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall Nov. 2. It pertains to two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers including plastic-handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers.
There are 134 models of plastic-handle fire extinguishers manufactured between Jan. 1, 1973, and Aug. 15, 2017, affected, the SAIB said, noting that there have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited fire extinguisher activation, or nozzle detachments.
