Visit AOPA at Great Alaska Aviation Gathering, Valdez

Anchorage will be abuzz May 5 and 6 (but really, when is it not?) for the 2018 Great Alaska Aviation Gathering.

A purple-and-white Kitfox fit easily beneath the wing of a Quest Kodiak on amphibious floats, inside the Great Alaska Aviation Gathering's exhibit hall--a FedEx maintenance hangar at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

AOPA President Mark Baker will host a Pilot Town Hall meeting on May 6 at 3:15 p.m. In addition, AOPA staff will be on hand during the weekend to host educational seminars and talk to members at our booth in the exhibit hall.

AOPA Vice President of Airports and State Advocacy Mike Ginter will present a seminar, “Collision Course: Avoiding Airborne Traffic,” at 10:30 a.m. on May 5, and the association will offer a Rusty Pilots seminar at 8 a.m. on May 6.

More than 25,000 attendees are anticipated over the weekend, with more than 300 exhibitors and aircraft on display. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

If you are heading to the Valdez Fly-In and Air Show the following weekend, May 11 through 13, to watch expert bush pilots in action, be sure to visit with AOPA Alaska Regional Manager Tom George and AOPA Northwest Mountain Regional Manager Warren Hendrickson.

George and Al Clayton of the Recreational Aviation Foundation will host a presentation, “Backcountry Airstrips in Alaska,” and Hendrickson will present a seminar about flying clubs called “Maximum Fun, Minimum Cost.”
