Aero Friedrichshafen postponed until mid-July

Continuing coronavirus concerns move global airshow from April

Aero Friedrichshafen, general aviation’s annual European kickoff to flying, exhibitions, and airshows, was postponed to July 14 through 17 because of continued coronavirus concerns, organizers announced. The event at Bodensee Airport in Friedrichshafen, Germany, originally scheduled for April 21 through 24, is considered one of the flying season’s innovation showcases for Europe-based aviation firms.

Head of Aero Roland Bosch and project manager Tobias Bretzel explained that ringing in the new year with optimism for holding the international aviation showcase as scheduled soon gave way to practicality.

"A few weeks ago, we started off the new year with confidence and hope. Metaphorically speaking, it was clear flying for the first few days, but we now find ourselves faced, once again, with a thick fog on the landing runway,” they wrote. The leaders said that “very positive feedback” encouraged them to reschedule the event to July, which also promised attendees “pleasant summer conditions.”

Representatives from Tecnam Aircraft, Garmin International, and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association supported the move to July.

Aero Friedrichshafen was canceled altogether in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Following the cancellation of the event last year, the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic coupled with the renewed lockdown extension unfortunately mean that Aero Friedrichshafen will have to be postponed,” said Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann. “With the aim of creating clear parameters for all our customers and partners, we have now decided at this relatively early stage to hold our upcoming Aero as a summer edition from July 14 to July 17, 2021, in Friedrichshafen.”
