Question of the Week
Question

How should I plan my altitude along a route of flight that will have me flying northeast on some segments and northwest on others? I plan to fly higher than 3,000 feet above the ground.
Answer
The best course of action would be to file the altitude that you initially intend to fly, and then change altitude when your magnetic course warrants it. If you are receiving flight following, notify air traffic control that you are changing altitude. If ATC issues different instructions, you are still in compliance with FAR 91.159 because you are complying with ATC. Read the full answer and join the discussion >
